About Me
Hi, my name is Jess I am a Birmingham-based photographer, drawn to creating unsettlingly imperfect images. My work usually creates a sense of discomfort, as there is something out of place, fragmented or uncanny about it. My main focus is on still life and product photography. My photographic series usually explore themes such as escapism and consumerism. I enjoy visually exploring that which distracts us from the ‘real world’ in humorous and uplifting ways embracing life rather than criticizing it.
I take inspiration from everyday escapisms such as music, films, books etc. As well as people, feelings and the different purposes they have in our lives. I describe my process as experimental, during shoots and the postproduction process, this varies between Digital and physical manipulations of my images. Most of my work has one bold element or focus that intends to distract the viewer from the rest of the picture. The intention of the work is to elicit a sense of fun from the images by making the whole process as experimental and explorative as possible.
